Nicholas Angelich / Festival Strings Lucerne
Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
Description
Robert Schumann wanted to incorporate tulips into the design of the front cover of his »Oriental Pictures«. These days we associate tulips mainly with the Netherlands, but in Schumann’s time they knew where the flower really originated from: Turkey and Persia – the Orient. Schumann drew inspiration for the work from the »maqāmas« of the Persian poet al-Hariri.
However, you would be searching in vain for an Oriental tone in the work, which was actually composed for piano four hands. Schumann was interested above all in the book’s protagonist, the »unusual hero« Abu Said, a kind of Persian Eulenspiegel.
In this Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival concert, the »Oriental Pictures« are flanked by the works of close friends to Robert and Clara Schumann: Frédéric Chopin, who was born in the same year as Robert Schumann, and the Danish composer Niels Wilhelm Gade, who was seven years younger.
