NDR Chamber Music Recital
Tchaikovsky / Ravel
»I simply cannot endure the combination of piano with violin or cello. To my ear the timbre of these instruments will not blend.« It would take a very good reason to get Peter Tchaikovsky to compose a piano trio. Not until 1881, when his mentor Nikolai Rubinstein died suddenly, did he put aside his objections. To mark the 125th anniversary of Tchaikovsky’s death, Roland Greutter, the first concertmaster of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, and the cellist Christopher Franzius join forces with the Ukrainian pianist Georgiy Dubko to perform the monumental piano trio. The chamber programme also features another milestone in the piano trio repertoire: Maurice Ravel’s colourful piano trio of 1914.
