NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra / Roland Greutter / Christoph Eschenbach
Mendelssohn Bartholdy / Bruckner
True Bruckner – without any Wagner
Bruckner with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra – legendary! For his return to the Hamburg podium so familiar to him, former chief conductor Christoph Eschenbach has chosen the great master’s Third Symphony. Anton Bruckner wrote the work with his idol Richard Wagner in mind. The »poor organist from Vienna« (Wagner’s less than flattering estimation) had travelled, full of enthusiasm, to Bayreuth to ask the »master of all masters« in person to accept the dedication. While Wagner, at best, approved of the symphony, today it is regarded as probably the first in which Bruckner’s unique personal style is expressed to perfection.
