The Munich Philharmonic is an institution – not only in its Bavarian home, but also among top orchestras around the world. The tradition-rich orchestra has been conducted by legends such as Gustav Mahler, and has performed the premieres of important milestones in music history. The Munich musicians now travel north for a two-day guest appearance at the Hamburg International Music Festival. Following the departure of Valery Gergiev, Daniele Gatti, one of the world’s leading conductors, takes over. This change of conductors has also led to a change in the programme. Rather than Dmitri Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony, his thunderous Fifth Symphony will be performed, with Mozart’s cheerful Symphony No. 29 forming a wonderful contrast.
Like no other work by Shostakovich, the Fifth has become a symbol of cultural suppression by murderous dictatorships. Fearing for his life, by 1937 the composer felt he had no other option but to bow to the requirements of the Stalinist regime in his creative work. But he secretly offered resistance – between the lines of his enigmatic music, in which jubilation and the grotesque lie side by side. The first half of the concert features Mozart’s popular Symphony in A Major, in which the young composer processed impressions from Italy.
