Mathis Stier, bassoon

The bassoon as finale
Most people would probably see a deep love of the sound of the bassoon as a minority interest. But at the closing concert of the 2024 Rising Stars Festival, Mathis Stier shows that this is a bit of a shaky position. With ample mastery of his instrument and material, he takes us through a programme that shows the enormous versatility of the bassoon and its repertoire, and is sure to awaken an enthusiasm for the instrument in the Hamburg audience.
Contrasting musical worlds characterise the beginning of the concert: a crackling combination of bassoon and electronics in the commissioned composition by composer Maria Sigfúsdóttir meets a baroque piece in which Stier is accompanied on the harpsichord.
Camille Saint-Saëns shows himself in his Sonata for Bassoon and Piano as a master of casual perfection, while Krzysztof Penderecki’s three miniatures, originally written for clarinet, demand maximum performance from the bassoonist in just a few minutes.
After this the programme moves rapidly towards the present day as Stier tests the boundaries of his instrument with great delight in works by Heinz Holliger, Lera Auerbach and Francis Poulenc.
