Return to the Elbe

According to The Guardian, Sir George Benjamin writes music of »ravishing, shimmering beauty«. The London-born composer’s music is among the most-played of all 21st-century works. After winning over the Hamburg public with his work and unassuming manner as the Elbphilharmonie Artist in Residence in the 2018/19 season, it’s high time he now returned to the Elbe – where he will be joined by the amazing Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the pianist and new music specialist Pierre-Laurent Aimard.

With George Benjamin’s conducting and the new programme he has put together, the international chamber orchestra is guaranteed to shine. The subtle duet for piano and orchestra was penned by Benjamin himself. The piece is dedicated to his dear friend Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who happily takes up the opportunity to perform »his« solo part. In Leoš Janáček’s imaginative concertino, the piano holds a dialogue with a delicate line-up of wind and string instruments. And the concert comes to a close with Maurice Ravel’s suite »Ma mère l’oye« (Mother Goose), which the composer wrote for children – inspired by the collection of French fairy-tales of the same name.
