Kim Kashkashian
Reflektor Manfred Eicher
Kim Kashkashian, one of the world’s leading viola players, appears at the Elbphilharmonie under the aegis of the Reflektor series. The American musician with Armenian roots has been working together with ECM founder Manfred Eicher for some 30 years now. An artistic cooperation based on mutual trust: Ms Kashkashian values Eicher’s feeling for special musical gestures.
With her recordings of the Brahms and Hindemith sonatas and of the Bach Viola Suites, the award-winning 67-year-old, who has worked with such major composers as Krzysztof Penderecki and Arvo Pärt, has helped bring the viola into the limelight. In contemporary music, which tends to focus more on the body of sound as such, the viola has become established as a solo instrument in the meantime. In a historical context, Kim Kashkashian sees the viola as being in a state of transition and experiment. »The viola is an absolutely flexible instrument that may respond better to a musician’s imagination than any other one.«
