Clashing melodies
The art of improvisation stands at the centre of the long-standing cooperation between Kayhan Kalhor from Iran and Erdal Erzincan from Turkey. The two Kurdish masters made their first album together back in 2004: entitled »The Wind«, it features the bowed lute known as the kamancheh and the long-necked lute bağlama.
Kalhor and Erzincan have worked together regularly since then, constantly refining their joint improvisations. The result is appealing spiritual music that takes its source material from the whole of Turkey and from the old Persian empire. The rippling, sometimes harsh-sounding runs of Erzincan’s bağlama and Kalhor’s melodic drone on the kamancheh circle and overlap each other, they drift apart, but find their way back to one great whole in the end. Classic Kurdish folk music, played like contemporary jazz.
