Jordi Savall: Die Routen der Sklaverei
Transatlantic
Festival kick-off: from Africa to the New World
Catalonian viola da gamba player Jordi Savall is one of the big names of the early music movement. For some 50 years now he has been working to rediscover forgotten masterpieces, and his latest concert programme weaves together music from the days of the transatlantic slave trade to form a moving history lesson in musical form.
Jordi Savall has dedicated his entire artist’s career to early music and historic performing practice. He started by concentrating on the medieval music of Spain and Portugal, and in particular of his native Catalonia; but over the decades he has investigated many other regions in depth, experimenting with a wide variety of different forms – but always against the background of early music.
With his latest project, too, Savall sets out to gather musical evidence from a bygone era. In »Slave routes across the world« he follows the routes of the transatlantic slave trade from Africa to South and North America. The programme, which enjoys UNESCO sponsorship, combines laments, war chants and drum sounds from Mali, Madagascar, Columbia, Mexico and Europe with historic texts about slavery, beginning with the first chronicles from the year 1444 and ending with the words of Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King from the 1960s.
Jordi Savall is accompanied in this concert by his ensembles Hespèrion XXI and La Capella Reial de Catalunya, and by guest musicians from Africa and South America.
