Star without airs and graces
A virtuoso and show star. Higher, faster, farther. That’s not Jan Lisiecki’s world. When the Canadian pianist recorded his debut album for Deutsche Grammophon at the age of 17, he didn’t try to prove his mettle with the virtuoso heavyweights of the piano repertoire, but just chose Mozart. »His music is so elegant, so pure and simple. But the simplicity is a mask concealing many complex ideas,« as the affable star pianist puts it. »Playing Mozart calls for emotional strength and dignity.«
Jan Lisiecki shows that he is more than up to the challenge in Hamburg with his performance of Mozart’s high-contrast Piano Concerto No. 22. And he also proves in this concert that even the utmost technical demands at the keyboard pose no problem for him by playing Chopin’s highly virtuoso Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise brillante – a work rarely heard in the version for piano and orchestra.
Please note: Instead of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major, KV 488, Jan Lisiecki performs the Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat major, KV 482, in this concert.
