Iveta Apkalna / Benjamin Appl / Martynas Levickis
The Elbphilharmonie Organ
Air, wind and breath
Vocals, accordion, organ – a line-up of performers that sounds as unusual as it is unique. Yet while these instruments might seem disparate at first, they have something in common. They all need one thing to produce their individual sounds – namely air. So when the Elbphilharmonie’s organist-in-residence, Iveta Apkalna, comes together with the baritone and former rising star Benjamin Appl and the Lithuanian accordionist Martynas Levickis in the Grand Hall for the opening of this year’s organ series, there’s bound to be some utterly exciting sound combinations in store thanks to breath, air and wind (as it’s called on the organ).
The evening’s programme traverses a wide range of periods, styles and facets of human existence. From the devotional mourning of the Renaissance composer John Dowland to the trust in God of composers like Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonín Dvořák to the origin of all music: folk music. Especially in the Baltic States, the home of Iveta Apkalna and Martynas Levickis, it is still at the centre of social life today.
