Hans-Ola Ericsson
Elbphilharmonie Organ
Swedish organist and composer Hans-Ola Ericsson is an anomaly in the international organ scene. There can surely be no other organist who has performed as many world premieres of contemporary music compositions in the last few years, nor is there one who is as dedicated to seeking out new sounds.
Ericsson has worked closely with John Cage, György Ligeti and Olivier Messiaen, but he has also made a name for himself as an interpreter of early music. As a composer of the post-avant-garde, he now expands the Elbphilharmonie organ’s already rich sound palette by using electronics.
In addition, he combines works by Messiaen, Ungváry and Bach with his own compositions. In Ericsson’s »The Four Beasts’ Amen«, for example, the organ enters into a dialogue with recordings of historic organs from Hamburg and the surrounding area in a colourful mixture of styles and genres.
