Angklung meets gamelan
The Elbphilharmonie’s gamelan consists of Indonesian gongs, drums and metallophones – a wonderful collection of instruments that is regularly played by the in-house ensembles. Under the guidance of the experienced gamelan teacher Steven Tanoto, participants experience how the gamelan brings people together in the weekly rehearsals: Indonesian music is never about the individual, but always the harmonic whole.
This season, the summer closing concert has a special theme. To mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Germany, the members of the Elbphilharmonie ensemble »Sekar Kenanga« have joined forces with the Angklung Hamburg Orchestra and the Angklung Orchestra Berlin. They will open the concert with pieces on the angklung, a traditional Indonesian bamboo instrument, before Sekar Kenanga plays works for the gamelan.
