In Distress

In difficult times, people have always sought consolation and support in the community – as well as in singing together and making music. This also applies to the era that produced our »classical music«. Johann Christian Bach’s Miserere occurred during the Seven Years’ War. Haydn wrote his Missa in angustiis (»in distress«) while Vienna was threatened by Napoleonic troops.

This music does not stop at the lament, but conveys confidence and strength at the same time – so much so that Haydn’s mass also celebrated Nelson’s victory over the Napoleonic troops in Egypt. The work went down in history as the »Nelson Mass«, and it has not failed to have a comforting effect to this day.

Hans Christoph Rademann made a significant contribution to the rediscovery of Johann Christian Bach with his celebrated CDs. As the successor to Helmut Rilling, he has since renewed the Gaechinger Cantorey: now a newly-founded baroque orchestra and newly-constituted choir combine to form a superbly blended period ensemble with the music of Haydn being an important focus of their work.
