Exciting contemporary music

Ensemble Resonanz is one of the world’s leading chamber orchestras and ensemble-in-residence of the Elbphilharmonie’s Recital Hall which it opened exactly five years ago. So it’s a point of honour to celebrate the birthday with a special programme. And they are joined by a special guest: the phenomenonal viola player Tabea Zimmermann, who was awarded the prestigious Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2020. Together with Argentine conductor Emilio Pomàrico, they present an exciting programme of contemporary music that is very well worth listening to – including a premiere.

»Anton Webern can say more in two minutes than most other composers in ten.« Thus a pupil of Webern’s about the master of brevity, who belonged to the innermost circle of the Second Viennese School. His famous »Five Movements« of 1909 not only marked the transition to atonality, they also testified to the composer’s concentration on absolute essentials.

A completely new work is contributed by composer Sarah Nemtsov, who was born in Oldenburg and is one of the most important voices on today’s contemporary music scene. Her unconventional style ranges from Renaissance and Baroque influences to jazz and rock. The evening is brought to an end by the Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by Friedrich Cerha, a work as impressive as it is full of resignation. Cerha, who celebrated his 95th birthday in 2021, is one of the leading lights of postwar Austrian culture.
