Enrico Rava & Fred Hersch
»The Song Is You«
In top form
Softer than its close relation, the trumpet, the flugelhorn is often the instrument of choice for jazz ballads, for the dreamy and even for the erotic in music. The album »The Song Is You« – recently recorded in a concert hall in Lugano, Switzerland, by Enrico Rava, the grand old maestro of Italian jazz, and the American pianist Fred Hersch – reveals just how capable the flugelhorn is when it comes to eerie, mysterious sounds and throaty, sandy tones. The two play their way through a hand-picked selection of jazz standards, entering into spontaneous musical dialogues and giving each other space for extended solo moments too. Something similar can be expected at the end of September in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall, when the duo come together for the evening.
Over the course of his long life, Enrico Rava has truly lived out all kinds of improvised music. Yet even in the most rugged situations, his playing has always retained something lyrical, charming, noble and naturally elegant. In a word: Italianità. Hersch’s playing, extremely well-informed by jazz history, is full of subtlety in tones and harmonies. He is one of the most consummate of jazz pianists – and still something of an insider tip.
