DakhaBrakha
Ukrainische Volksmusik neu aufgelegt – Around the World
A celebration of freedom
The DakhaBrakha quartet from Kyiv has been experimenting with folk-song motifs from Ukraine, eastern Europe and western Asia in modern ways for almost 20 years. Their captivating music is like a celebration of freedom. Even more so in light of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.
The name of the band – which was established in 2004 by Vladyslav Troitskiy, the director of the avant-garde theatre Dakh – is taken from the Ukrainian words for giving and taking. The ensemble travels widely to record regional folk music and combines what they find with other musical influences – yielding a minimalist yet sacred and contemporary sound. When they perform live, the quartet’s members wear colourful traditional dress – their songs feature dramatic build-ups of suspense, and are full of power, humour and melancholy.
