Catoire-Ensemble
»Late Romantic Piano Quintets«
Those who love Johannes Brahms are bound to hold Sergei Taneyev in just as high a regard. Known by some as the »Russian Brahms«, Taneyev set a new milestone with his four-movement Piano Quintet of 1910. Less sweeping but nevertheless its equal, Georgi Catoire’s quintet – written on the eve of the First World War – ends on a dreamy note. Anton Webern wrote his quintet in 1907, on the cusp of his atonal period. The highly expressive single movement is an artistic document of leave-taking, seeing off the late-Romantic age. In this concert, the Catoire-Ensemble’s five brilliant soloists serve up some real chamber music gems.
