Charlie Chaplin’s remarkable career began in the slums of south-east London, in the midst of noisy streets and music-hall songs: he observed his parents and other actors, went on stage himself, learned to play the violin and cello, and set up the Charlie Chaplin Music Publishing Company. Later on, his own symphonic compositions for films achieved legendary status, e.g. »City Lights« and »Modern Times«.
The Symphoniker Hamburg have been presenting silent films accompanied by live music for a long time, in cooperation with the Europäische Filmphilharmonie. But this is a film concert with a difference: it combines Chaplin’s own compositions with the works that inspired him, and shows a careful selection of film sequences, both iconic and unknown, of photos and private film material from the Chaplin archives, as well as new reconstructions and arrangements of music.
