Russian maestro Valery Gergiev is appearing in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall no fewer than five times this season. The first concert features the Vienna Philharmonic, with which Gergiev has already enjoyed great success as a guest conductor, and is given over entirely to music by Rachmaninov. His popular Second Piano Concerto – known amongst musicians simply as »Rach 2« - has often been used for film soundtracks, and even served as inspiration for Frank Sinatra. It goes without saying that in the Elbphilharmonie we hear the original, with Gergiev’s countryman Denis Matsuev as soloist. The concerto is followed by Rachmaninov’s expansive Second Symphony, generally recognised as his most important orchestral work.
