Sofia Gubaidulina’s credo is »to bring love where hate reigns«. And with her oratorio »Über Liebe und Hass« (On Love and Hatred), which was premiered in 2016, she has honoured that credo in style. Based on a poem by Francis of Assisi, the work represents her spiritual response to the growing peacelessness in the world of today, a warning of the downfall of our civilisation. The composition is a colossal choral symphony for four solo singers, two choirs and orchestra, one that is regarded – thanks to its theological construction and the existential power of its assertions – as the composer’s summum opus. The Symphoniker Hamburg, conducted by Peter Tilling, brings the Gubaidulina spotlight at the »Hamburg International Music Festival« to a close with this impressive work.
