The 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic belong to the leading institutions of the international music scene. In 1972, a radio production of Julius Klengel’s Hymnus for Twelve Cellos featuring members of the philharmonic cello group led to the founding of a 12-strong ensemble of soloists – and their technical and virtuosic qualities conquered the hearts of audiences around the world in no time. The ensemble’s repertoire covers a range of genres, and when the 12 cellists come to Hamburg, they will be playing works by Maurice Ravel, the French jazz legend Michel Legrand, the film music composer Ennio Morricone, and Astor Piazzolla. Whether it’s classical, jazz, tango or avant-garde music, the luscious sound of 12 cellos always captivates with a unique and multi-facetted mixture of qualities.
