Eine kleine Nachtmusik. This is a possible translation for the piece written by Italian composer Luigi Dallapiccola in 1954 – even if it does not have so much in common with Mozart, but rather combines with great expression different modern musical styles with Italian tone colour. After the Dallapiccola, Rachmaninov’s almost unplayable Second Piano Concerto is the perfect challenge for the young South Korean pianist Dong Hyek Lim. This concert ends on a note of Scandinavian clarity with Finnish composer Jean Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony – a score whose clear lines still allow ample scope for Late Romantic rapture.
