This is certainly to be a passionate evening! The concert opens with Bach’s Orchestral Suite in D major. The listener cannot help but be reminded of the festivities of a Baroque courtly ball, and the work contains one truly catchy tune: the heavenly »Air«, one of the most moving pieces of music ever written. The programme continues in a turbulent mood with Haydn’s Symphony in F minor. Haydn composed it in 1768, but it was only much later that it was given the nickname »La passione« – based on the claim that the composer was inspired »by the death of someone close to him that upset him deeply«. There is no evidence to substantiate this, but the music itself does suggest some such association: sudden dynamic and rhythmic contrasts stir up the otherwise prevailing calm mood.
