»You can imagine how happy a composer is when her work, her dream, is presented so perfectly for the audience,« said Sofia Gubaidulina after a performance of her piece »Verwandlung« (Transformation) by the Berlin-based saxophone quartet sonic.art. What an honour for the ensemble, which is one of the most interesting formations in the contemporary scene! Together with Swedish trombonist Christian Lindberg and other colleagues, the ensemble has also released a recording of »Verwandlung«, in which Gubaidulina explores the relationship between the individual and the collective. At the Hamburg International Music Festival, the ensemble also performs works originally composed for strings and that achieve a meditative transcendence through subtly produced soundscapes – such as Arvo Pärt’s epochal »Fratres« and Philip Glass’s minimal music for the film »Mishima«.
