The Schumann Quartet from Cologne is always open to new concert encounters with unusual musical personalities. Now the four Rhineland string players join forces with Russian master pianist Anna Vinnitskaya, who lives in Hamburg and is celebrated all over the world for her impressive virtuosity and the poetic depth of her playing. Moreover, she has a special bond with the music of her homeland, as is documented by tonight’s entirely Russian programme.
The first part of the concert is devoted to Tchaikovsky, with a selection of characteristic pieces for piano, then his First String Quartet. After the interval, Anna Vinnitskaya and the Schumann Quartett perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s exciting Piano Quintet, for which he was rewarded with 100,000 roubles – a princely sum in 1940.
