Forbidden love that ends tragically: A timeless conflict probably finds its most beautiful form in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Equally timeless are the songs of the ballet composed by Sergei Prokofiev, which retells the story of the famous lovers. The composer himself transformed the ballet into orchestral suites – lucky for the audience, who will enjoy Prokofiev’s enchantingly beautiful melodies in concert!

Christoph Eschenbach is giving himself a gift for his 80th birthday by performing two of these suites with his Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra. In addition, the performance on this evening will feature the young Greek flutist Stathis Karapanos, this year’s winner of the Leonard Bernstein Award. Karapanos, Eschenbach, and the Festival Orchestra will interpret works by Bernstein and Theodorakis and impressively demonstrate how the flute is capable of expressing all moods between heartfelt melancholy and an exuberant zest for life.
