Had there not been this one teacher at Philippe Jaroussky’s school, it would have meant a bitter loss for today’s music world. For the singer was born in a Paris suburb in 1978 to a totally unmusical family – something that is hard to imagine now. At his teacher’s advice Jaroussky began taking violin lessons, then later switched from violin to voice and went on, as is now well-known, to became one of the most visionary countertenors of our time. He performs many of his carefully compiled programmes together with the ensemble Artaserse, which he set up himself, and that applies to tonight’s concert too. Opening with Antonio Caldara’s »Oratorio on the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ«, it combines sacred arias and instrumental works by famous Baroque masters Johann Adolph Hasse, Antonio Vivaldi and Domenico Scarlatti.
