A string quartet plus piano, along with a baritone as a narrator and singer: for this special line-up the musicians have put together a truly exquisite and powerful matinee programme of works by four twentieth-century composers. Before the interval, they perform, in Victor Ullmann’s String Quartet No. 3, Op. 46 and Arnold Schönberg’s »Ode to Napoleon« to a text by Lord Byron, two works that were composed in times of great hardship but whose aesthetics rise majestically above those concerns.
