The Quartet in C minor plays with ambiguous irony in the scherzo and gestures of pathos in the minuet, displaying early Romantic characteristics in its »Sturm und Drang« moments: a work located between convention and new departures. Irony is likewise one of the stylistic devices used to impressive effect by Shostakovich in his String Quartet No. 3, written directly after the war in 1946. This many-faceted quartet is among the composer’s most popular; but with its grotesque and often menacing moments that recall the terrors of war, it is not a lightweight work. The highly productive English composer Arnold Bax wrote his Quintet for his compatriot Léon Goossens, one of the premier oboists of his time. The melodies and thematic material of this lyrical work are imbued with the composer’s love of Irish music.«
