Words are not the only way to tell a story. The Slovakian conductor Juraj Valčuha has been working with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra for a number of years – this time he returns with poetry about love and death, set to music by Eastern European composers. Antonín Dvořák drew inspiration from Shakespeare’s play when composing his »Othello«. In the original score you can see pencilled notes stating which music relates to which scenes. And so listeners need only prick their ears a little to detect when Othello embraces his Desdemona in blissful delight – and when he strangles her to death in a mad rage.
