The war years entailed a double fight for survival for Dmitri Shostakovich. On the one hand he was exposed to German attacks during the siege of Leningrad and had to compose while grenades exploded nearby, and on the other, the Damocles sword of Stalin’s reign of terror hung over his head. In his Eighth Symphony he officially reflected on the horrors of war.
