In 2004 the NDR commissioned Hans Werner Henze to transform the Dionysian dance of the Maenads from his opera »The Bassarids« into a self-contained orchestral piece, of which the NDR Orchestra then gave the first performance. To celebrate its 75th anniversary, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra now plays Henze’s work again – this time under the baton of charismatic Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare. Dionysos, the god of ecstasy among the ancient Greeks, seems to have influenced the rest of tonight’s programme too: the Dance of Salome, with which Richard Strauss shocked his audience, his youthful work »Don Juan«, describing the amorous adventures of the famous womanizer, and Édouard Lalo’s romantic Cello Concerto, with which Jean-Guihen Queyras makes his overdue debut with the orchestra.
