6 April 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of Igor Stravinsky’s death. To mark the occasion, the NDR Chor makes a musical trip to important places in the great Russian composer’s life, under the baton of its former conductor Philipp Ahmann and accompanied by prominent guests. Venice, where Stravinsky was buried at his own wish, became a centre of Italian vocal music in the 16th century thanks to composers such as Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi. Several hundred years later, the Italian vocal tradition influenced Stravinsky’s own choral music, such as the setting of the Mass that he wrote in 1944 in his new home, Los Angeles.
