In 2020, the »Hamburg International Music Festival« is dedicated to Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the leading composers of the modern age. She received the Praemium Imperiale art prize in 1998 and the Polar Music Prize in 2002. The NDR Chor and Klaas Stok perform her work »Canticle of the Sun« in St. Katharinen Church. »There are composers who construct their works very consciously, but I am one of those who instead ›cultivate‹ them,« says Sofia Gubaidulina. She also uses a beautiful image of the roots of a tree, from which everything grows: her compositions are the branches and the leaves – always new, yet firmly rooted in tradition.
