The theme of this concert with Kaspars Putniņš is the dialogue between cultures under the symbol of the lotus flower. The Latvian conductor presided over a sensational project with the NDR Chor last season and was immediately invited back. Toshio Hosokawa sees his choral work as a homage to Schumann, and the Japanese composer’s diverse oeuvre has been influenced by both cultures. »The lotus flower shudders / Before the sun’s splendour / The moon, he is her lover / She perfumes and weeps and trembles / For love and love’s pain«, so goes the poem by Heinrich Heine. Hosokawa paints an image of the Buddha sitting on a lotus flower, a symbol of transcendence. In Asian culture, the dialogue between the lotus and the moon has a deep spiritual meaning. Jonathan Harvey also provides for a fascinating dialogue – between the words of the Heart Sutra and the poems of E. E. Cummings.
