Haydn’s humour has achieved legendary status. In contrast, the expressive moments of his music – another element in the composer’s multi-facetted work – are less well known. Encountering Haydn’s »Seven Last Words« could therefore be quite a surprise for some listeners. In this Passion cycle, Joseph Haydn dedicates one slow instrumental movement to each of the final words Jesus uttered on the cross.
