She is a living piano legend: Elisabeth Leonskaja. For Schubert in particular, the Georgia native and longtime Vienna resident is regarded as an absolute authority. Just a few days after her 75th birthday, she celebrates in the Elbphilharmonie with two musician friends: it goes without saying that the programme features music by her favourite Austrian composer.
Together with Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman and the Hungarian cellist István Várdai, Elisabeth Leonskaja plays Schubert’s two great piano trios, which were written in around 1827. The two works form a couple like fire and water, something recognised early on by Robert Schumann: he described the E flat major trio as »active, masculine, dramatic«, while his attributes for the sister piece in B flat major were »suffering, feminine and lyrical«. Leaving gender clichés to one side, the two trios also have depth, warmth and a wealth of melody in common.
