Lise de la Salle is one of France’s best-known female pianists. The 30-year-old artist made her concert debut at the age of nine, went on to study in Paris and New York City, and has made a name for herself first and foremost with the works of Bach, Liszt und Schumann. In Hamburg, she now plays 20th-century dance movements from different countries and cultures.

Depending on origin and inclination, stylised dances of very different characters were composed in the 20th century. Thus, French composers like Saint-Saëns, Debussy and Ravel evolved their individual waltz and mazurka styles, while Bartók refined rustic Rumanian folk dances with their characteristic uneven rhythms, and Stravinsky and Astor Piazzolla transported the Argentine tango into the realm of art music.

George Gershwin and William Bolcom experimented with the syncopation of ragtime music, while Armenian composer Khachaturian even wrote an oriental-style sabre dance. Lise de la Salle whirls her way through these vastly different rhythms at the keyboard with verve: variety is guaranteed.
