Under the Skin
Concerts at the Elbphilharmonie and Laeiszhalle are currently subject to coronavirus-related restrictions. This event is therefore going ahead with an amended programme and reduced seating capacity. There will be two concerts on 17 December 2020 at 18:45 and 20:45: Go to replacement concerts
The concert was part of the subscription »String Quartet«. We will be in touch directly with subscribers to notify them of all alternative options.
The four members of the Jerusalem Quartet describe the 15 string quartets by Dmitri Shostakovich, with which they already captivated Hamburg concertgoers in the Laeiszhalle in 2013, as »one of the 20th century’s most important cycles«. The quartet has also released several prizewinning records of Shostakovich’s music. Tonight, the Russian-Israeli ensemble again explores the world of the Shostakovich quartets – and juxtaposes these with two pieces by Russian composers.
Sergei Prokofiev composed his Second String Quartet, which is partly influenced by Oriental folk music, in 1941. Igor Strawinsky’s Three Pieces for String Quartet of 1915, on the other hand, turn out to be bizarre miniatures. These works are framed by two stirring string quartets that get under one’s skin, both written by Shostakovich in the 1960s.
