Although he was recognised and held in high regard by great contemporaries like Shostakovich, not least thanks to his individual musical expressivity and his extremely sensitive creative power, Alexander Lokshin remains largely unknown. Scarcely anyone today knows the name of this composer, born in 1920, who left eleven symphonies to posterity, almost all of them based on poems from different cultures. He wrote »Margaret’s Songs« in 1973, based on verses from Goethe’s »Faust«, which Boris Pasternak translated into Russian.
Shostakovich was only 19 when he wrote his First Symphony: a stroke of genius that brought its composer immediate recognition. That was in the middle of the »roaring twenties«, when the Western world and indeed the Soviet Empire was busy playing with masks, dolls and fairy-tale figures. As evidenced in the works of Stravinsky, Hindemith and many others besides.
