Anton Bruckner has had all manner of epithets showered on him over the years, among them »devout fool«, »God’s musician«, »New Testament prophet«, »total nutcase« and »a man who has gone insane«. But what did he actually produce? Bruckner composed large-scale symphonies, inspired by those from Beethoven’s pen. And he had to wait a while until people noticed that his music was something special, that it knew and respected boundaries, but still seemed to break through them. Bruckner lived in a different world, at the opposite end of the spectrum from composers that he admired such as Wagner and Liszt. Bruckner’s music is thoroughly individual, not to say self-referential.
