The composer himself once described it as »a concerto for elephants«, and it is true that Sergei Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto places high demands on the soloist. Demands that Russian pianist Denis Matsuev, winner of the 1998 Tchaikovsky Competition, is undoubtedly equal to. He has made a name for himself as a Rachmaninov interpreter, and was even invited by Rachmaninov’s grandson to try out the great composer’s own piano, which he went on to play for a CD of Rachmaninov’s music. Accompanied tonight by the orchestra Filarmonica della Scala under the baton of Riccardo Chailly, Denis Matsuev plays the Piano Concerto No. 3, which the composer wrote in 1909 to perform himself on his first tour of America.
