They are almost the same age, they both come from Hungary, and they both fought the Orbán government’s interference in their native culture: Iván Fischer and András Schiff are two outstanding artists of their generation who have plenty to say for themselves in many areas. But the concert platform remains the place where they are most at home. In four concerts given together with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, which Fischer founded in 1983, they perform the five Beethoven piano concertos, combining them in each case with works by Dvořák. At first glance, the two composers do not have so much in common, but these programmes bring out the dance element in their respective works.
