As the December nights draw in and the weather takes a turn for the worse, why not escape to the concert hall to enjoy birdsong, babbling brooks and fresh Alpine air. With its chief conductor Jakub Hrůša, the Bamberg Symphony has prepared a programme featuring the nature lover and passionate walker Ludwig van Beethoven and the alpinist Richard Strauss.
As it happens, Beethoven was critical of programme music that translated non-musical elements into music. But despite that, in his Sixth Symphony he uses the orchestra to imitate birdsong, to depict a rambler striding valiantly and even to evoke a storm.
A storm is also the climax in Strauss’ »Alpine Symphony«, in which the composer describes through music an actual experience he had climbing a mountain.
