Calmus Ensemble
»Summer Sounds A Cappella«
Works ranging from Heinrich Schütz to the Comedian Harmonists
Precision, lightness and humor is what makes the ensemble Calmus one of the most successful vocal groups in Germany today. The wide range of timbres, joy of music-making, and also the imaginative programmes developed by the five Leipzig-based singers inspire audiences continually. Their credo: discover something new again and again!
Having grown up in the age-old tradition of distinguished German boys’ choirs, the five musicians feel quite at home in the vocal music of the Renaissance, Baroque and Romanticism. Despite this, music of the modern era is of particular interest to the group: pop and folk songs as well as songs and evergreens of the 1920s, usually in arrangements made by themselves. Numerous commissions have been placed in recent years, which they in turn have premiered, including but not limited to works by Paul Moravec, Mathew Rosenblum, Bernd Franke, Wolfram Buchenberg, Dan Dediu and Harald Banter.
The quintet enjoys interesting partnerships with the MDR Symphony Orchestra (Weill, Seven Deadly Sins), the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, the Hamburger Ratsmusik and the Hessischer Rundfunk Big Band. Most recently, Calmus has begun working on a project with the author Elke Heidenreich (»Nachtgedanken«), with the Lautten Compagney Berlin (»BachArkaden«) and in a programme featuring works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, side-by-side with the actor Bruno Ganz.
