Caetano Veloso
World culture in human form
»Caetanear« isn’t officially a verb in Portuguese. But since the word was used by Caetano Veloso as an album title, everyone in Brazil at least knows what the wordplay points to. »Cantar« means »to sing«, so »caetanear« is the unique way in which the grandmaster of tropicalismo has been singing his songs for decades. In summer 2021, Caetano Veloso delighted the audience in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall with his clear, light voice in two solo concerts on the same evening. He now returns with his band to perform songs from his new album »Meu Coco«, which he wrote during the coronavirus period.
Veloso’s album »Meu Coco« is a journey inside the artist’s head. The record is the first in his 60-year career in which he composed all the tunes and lyrics himself. It is a wonderfully multi-layered work – a soft yet unconventional weaving of words and music into one colourful fabric. Veloso, who turned 80 last year, is not just a singer of beautiful songs – he is a living piece of world culture.
