Bach: B Minor Mass / Thomas Hengelbrock
Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble – 2G+ AND PHYSICAL DISTANCE
Heavenly sounds
»If all of Bach’s other compositions were lost, the Mass in B Minor would, by itself, testify to this artist’s greatness for centuries to come with the power of a divine revelation«, claimed Johann Sebastian Bach’s biographer Philipp Spitta in 1880. His assessment has proven well-founded. To this day, the Mass in B Minor is regarded as a pinnacle in Bach’s vocal work, and perhaps even in European sacred music in general. In a tonal language unrivalled in intensity, the work explores themes that go to the core of human existence: happiness and joy, loneliness and despair.
Thomas Hengelbrock and his Balthasar Neumann Ensemble have exactly what it takes to deliver a memorable performance of a work that went beyond the liturgical conventions of its time. With their characteristic fusion of the choral and orchestral sounds, the ensembles investigate the secrets of Bach’s magnificent music on original instruments, taking the audience a step closer to heaven.
