Avishai Cohen »1970«
Elbphilharmonie Jazz
The Israeli Avishai Cohen is a pioneer in the field of modern double-bass playing. His style is marked by an understanding of modern jazz that incorporates a wide variety of influences from North Africa and the Middle East as well as rock, chamber music and Hebrew folk songs. A special Mediterranean sound where Arab rhythms rub shoulders with Western harmonies. Cohen presents his latest album, titled »1970«, at the Elbphilharmonie – an album influenced by soul, funk and African-American music of the 1970s, a decade of great musical significance for him. Having grown up listening to the likes of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Police, but also with Sephardic folk music of his native country, Cohen later studied at the acclaimed New School of Music in New York. »1970« is his long-awaited vocal album, where the double bassist once more comes to the fore as singer.
