The String Quartet series in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall opens with a highlight: the Berlin-based Artemis Quartett was founded in 1989. It is regarded as one of the most outstanding quartet ensembles worldwide and has its own concert series in the Berliner Philharmonie and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. Performing works by Mendelssohn, Schumann and Shostakovich, the quartet presents an exceptional musical range.

Mendelssohn’s Quartet in D major is characterised by flawless elegance, complemented by virtuoso violin passages that demand absolute technical perfection. The middle part of the programme is quite different: in his shortest string quartet, Shostakovich concentrates on the essentials and puts his spiritual life at the centre of the musical development. This intimacy spans a bridge to Schumann’s String Quartet in a minor – in which the romanticist Schumann searches for the poetry in the music, elevating the sensual expression to the main theme of the art.

Renovation Work in Recital Hall Foyer: The Recital Hall Foyer is currently not accessible owing to renovation work currently being carried out. A cloakroom for guests will be provided on the Plaza in close vicinity to the entrance of the Recital Hall. Some intermission refreshments will also be on offer on the Plaza.
